Membranes

Membranes are large sheets of fabric that are placed underground to form a protective layer. They are a highly versatile product that can be utilised for a wide range of applications such as drainage, engineering, and landscaping.

We offer a range of different membranes, including geotextile membranes, weed membranes, damp-proof membranes, and impermeable membranes.

What Are The Different Membrane Types?

We provide four different membrane types:

  • Geotextile membranes are made of 100% polypropylene or polyester and are typically wrapped over soakaway crates to keep silt and debris out of the system. They are also used to keep soil and aggregate layers stable.
  • Weed membranes are used to prevent weed growth from infiltrating the drainage system and clogging pipes.
  • Damp proof membrane is made from recycled polythene. These garden membranes are typically used inside properties to prevent moisture from entering the structure.
  • Impermeable membranes are utilised in attenuation applications where water must be kept within an attenuation tank without penetrating the surrounding soil.

What Membrane Should Be Used Under Gravel?

To keep gravel from moving around too much, place a strong geotextile membrane between the layers of soil and gravel. This not only allows water to travel through normally, but it also permits the gravel to remain firm regardless of what goes over it.

The membrane for gardens will help restrict weeds from growing through the gravel, allowing you to keep your outside space as tidy as possible!

How To Lay A Membrane For Gravel?

Laying gravel membrane is a simple technique. All you have to do is take the following steps:

  1. Clear the area where the garden membrane will be installed. If you're particularly concerned about weeds, apply a weed killer to the soil before you begin.
  2. This is the easiest part. Lay the membrane across the surface of the area to be covered, leaving at least a 10cm overlap at joints and edges.
  3. Finally, spread the gravel. For heavily used walkways or driveways, we recommend a gravel depth of 5cm. After you've laid the gravel, use a rake to make an even layer over the area.

How To Stop Weeds From Growing Through Membrane?

It’s unlikely to find weeds growing through a sturdy, high-quality garden membrane that has been installed beneath your gravel. However, if you do see a weed popping through, there are a few things you can try to remove it and/or prevent new ones from growing:

  • Boiling water - just pour boiling water over the relevant areas to kill any invasive weeds.
  • Saltwater - make a solution of one part salt to three parts water and apply it to the affected areas.

TOP TIP: Be cautious if your gravel is near plants that you want to keep alive, as salt water can destroy anything that grows where you pour it, not just the weeds!

Does Weed Membrane Let Water Through?

Yes, the weed membrane allows water to pass through. The membrane for gardens prevents weeds from growing through to the ground surface while allowing water and nutrients to flow through to the soil beneath.
