How to clad a brick wall

Installing cladding over existing brickwork is a straightforward job, but depending on the material you’re using to clad the wall it’s sometimes best left to the professionals.

If you’re looking to install your cladding as a DIY job, simply follow these instructions:

  1. Clean the brickwork into the best state possible to ensure that the cladding can be securely affixed to the wall.
  2. Fix support battens to the brickwork. These are best designed by a structural engineer – this is to make sure that they’re strong enough to withstand forces like wind uplift.
  3. If you need or want to, install any vapour-permeable membranes or insulation while the support battens are being installed.
  4. Now all you need to do is follow the usual installation instructions for whichever type of cladding you’ll be fixing to the wall. Weatherboarding can usually be fixed directly to the battens using screws or nails, whereas stone cladding has a more complex installation process.
